Last month, The New Yorker, featured two pieces on sprezzatura as a lesser known word, meaning studied nonchalance. They also reintroduced George Frazier, 1960s Esquire fashion columnist, to a new generation of readers. Columnist Roger Angell shares that Frazier, "found “sprezzatura” somewhere— [to him] it meant spirit and nonchalance: cool—and laid it as a laurel on people he particularly admired."
The best thing about style, is that it's entirely subjective. Individual style should be a celebrated extension of yourself. Don't try too hard, have fun and make it your own.
Some thoughts on how to try sprezzatura -
- A collared shirt half tucked in
- Casually folded pocket square or maybe gloves in the winter
- Sunglasses hanging off a belt loop on your chinos
- Different watch strap
